SPOILER: It was a great experience!
But let’s start from the beginning.. After some months of desert driving with a couple of friends (and sometimes alone) I finally decided to join Dubai Offroaders and try to be in a bigger group. Usually I don’t like groups… Everything above 4 persons is too much for me..!
I asked my friend Cosimo to come with me, in case I didn’t like the atmosphere and I wanted to drive alone if for some reason the group wasn’t welcoming or they didn’t allow me to fly the drone.
All these problems were only in my mind.. As soon as I arrived I met Sebastian and his wife, then one by one I met almost all the 30 drivers and their passengers. Very nice people, not at all the military/scout atmosphere that I expected!
After a short brief with the marshals we split in 4 groups, depending on the number of drives completed with D.O., and we began the adventure! The first 20/25 minutes weren’t much fun: hard sand (it rained the night before), very easy track to follow, but I couldn’t expect more from my 1st Newbie drive..! Then little by little things started to become interesting! The dunes were steeper, the difficulty increased. Great, time to fly the drone! My friend Niko started his DJI Phantom 3 and we’ve been able to capture some breath taking views of the desert, the camels, the convoy, the cars drifting, the beautiful red of the dunes!
Then something happened.. A big sand storm! I had the chance to drive in the desert in the middle of a sand storm! The sky changed, the colours changed, all of a sudden we were in the middle of a Tim Burton movie..! No more drone, just gorpros strapped to the car, I was able to capture some unusual atmosphere, with the sand flying from the peaks of the dunes. Some drops of rain also fell and we witnessed some very frightening lightings cracking the sky!
